The Explanation of Hadith If you were to commit a bad deed, then follow it with a good deed.”

Praise be to Allah and may Allah increase the honor and raise the rank of our Master Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:

It means: “If you were to commit a bad deed, then follow it with a good deed.”

It was said to him: Is saying “la ilaha illallah” among the good deeds ?

He said: “It is the best of the good deeds.”

This hadith means that is required from the slave to follow the bad deed he commits with a good deed.

The good deeds are of many types, some are among the obligations; while others are among the recommended (optional) deeds. So any good deed, which is done in compliance with the sunnah (way) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam came with would erase as much as Allah wills from the bad deeds.

This hadith also indicates that “la ilaha illallah” (which means that no one is God except Allah) is the best of the good deeds because it is the word of tawhid in which by uttering it the blasphemer embraces Islam. Embracing Islam for the blasphemer does not happen by saying subhanallah (which means that Allah is clear of any imperfection), or by saying Allahu akbar (which means: Allah is the greatest in status), or by saying alhamdulillah (which means: All due praise is to Allah), or any other words which clear Allah imperfection. That is why it is required to say “la ilaha illallah” a lot more than any kind of dhikr.

It was narratted in the sahih of Muslim and in the book of Du^a‘ for al-Bayhaqiyy that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:

It means: “The most beloved words to Allah are four: Subhanallah,                 alhamdulillah, la ilaha illallah, and Allahu akbar.”

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam combined these four in one hadith, he did not mention first “la ilaha illallah”, but rather he mentioned first “subhanallah”. This is not an indication that “subhanallah” is better than what was mentioned after it in that hadith. However, it is possible that “subhanallah” is better than   “alhamdulillah”, and it is also possible that in some cases it is better than “Allahu akbar”. The Prophet did not mean to sequence these four words according to preference; however, he meant that these four words are the best words of dhikr. As for which one takes precedence of the other, this is known from another hadith like the one which was mentioned earlier that the best of the good deeds is “la ilaha illallah”, we understand from this hadith that the best of all kinds of dhikr is “la ilaha illallah”.

Some of these four words are obligatory in some of the acts of worship, for instance saying “Allahu akbar” is an obligation and integral in the prayer, because the opening of the prayer is to say “Allahu akbar”. Since this is the case, then saying “Allahu akbar” has a special merit; for it is the key to the prayer which is among the best deeds.

It was reported in a sahih hadith which was related by Imam Malik in his book al-Muata‘ and by others about the merit of “la ilaha illallah” that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:

It means: [The best of what I and the prophets before me said is:

No one is God except Allah, alone, without any partner with Him. To Him belong the Dominion and the praising, and He has the Power over everything.”]

So, this confirmed sahih hadith is a clear evidence that “la ilaha illallah” is the best of the words which Glorify Allah tabaraka wa ta^ala.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:

It means: ” If you were to commit a bad deed, then follow it with a good deed.”

It was said to him: Is saying “la ilaha illallah” among the good deeds?

He said: “It is the best of the good deeds.”

So, his saying about “la ilaha illallah” that it is the best of the good deeds means it the best of the deeds that are done to get the rewards from Allah, although it is a light thing that is uttered by the tongue without a toil.

There is no Religious rule which states that the best of the deeds are those which need toil and effort to perform. In reality there are some of the deeds which take less effort and need less toil and are better than other good deeds like the honorable word “la ilaha illallah”. It is a light word which is uttered by the tongue; however, Allah made it the best of the good deeds.

No matter how much of good deeds the person does, to Allah “la ilaha illallah” takes precedence that is because it is the mean for the blasphemers to embrace Islam.

The blasphemer who wants to embrace Islam, cannot do so without uttering it or what gives its meaning.

It is valid for the blasphemer, who wants to embrace Islam, to say: “No one is Creator except Allah,  Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah“, or to say “No one is Lord except Allah,  Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah“, it is also valid for him to say “No one is Lord except ar-Rahman“, or “No one is God except ar-Rahman“. Because all of these words give the meaning of “la ilaha illallah”; however, the best of all of these words is to say “la ilaha illallah”.

It is valid for the person who wants to embrace Islam to utter the translation of “la ilaha illallah” in his own language which he knows.

It is not a condition for him to utter “la ilaha illallah” in Arabic; however, it is valid to utter its translation in order to embrace Islam.

As for the addition of the word “<Ash-hadu> which means here: I testify” accompanied with “<An> which means here: “That” it would become: “Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah” which means:

“I testify that no one is God except Allah” which is known as the Testification of Faith.

Although it is valid to utter “la ilaha illallah” for the one who wants to embrace Islam, the scholars said that saying “Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah” is better than that because the word “<Ash-hadu> which means: I testify” gives a meaning which assures the content of the  Testification of Faith. And because it indicates that the one who utters it testifies out of certainty, belief, and knowledge. Consequently, saying “I know that there is no one is God except Allah” would not have the same rank as “I testify that no one is God except Allah”

“I testify that no one is God except Allah” assures more the

confirmation of the Godhood to Allah ta^ala, for it is an indication to the: Testification, belief, and knowing with certainty. So the meaning of “I testify that no one is God except Allah” is: I know for certain, and I’m firm without hesitance or doubt, and I know that no one is God except Allah.

This means that no one deserves to be worshipped except Allah, i.e. no one deserves the ultimate submission and humbleness except Allah.

It means that Allah is the only One who deserves the extreme submission and humbleness, and what is other than Allah like the prophets, angels, and others do not deserve this worship which is the extreme submission and humbleness.

Also, “la ilaha illallah” is an indication to all what is necessary to be of the attributes of Allah from the attributes of perfection, in which Godhood is not confirmed without them.

Among these attributes is Life (al-Hayat) which indicates that He is Alive, it indicates that the One who deserves the ultimate submission and humbleness is Alive and is not dead. It is also an indication of Knowledge, i.e. this God Who is the only one Who deserves ultimate submission and humbleness knows everything.

“La ilaha illallah” also indicates that Allah is attributed with Power which is the Power to bring into the state of existence what He willed for to come into the state of existence, this also includes Will (al-Iradah). It means that Allah specifies whatever He wills with whatever He wills. He specifies whatever He wills with existence, so He brings it into the state of existence. He also specifies whatever He wills with a certain characteristic rather than another characteristic which is its opposite.

So, with His will, Allah ta^ala specified the creatures with the different characteristics they have, he specified the human with special characteristics rather than making it like other creatures. He also specified other than the human with attributes which He willed that they be their characteristics.

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.
