Learning the Religious Knowledge Coupled with Good Manners is a Reason for the Complete Excelling in the Religion

Praise be to Allah and may Allah increase the honor and raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

Thereafter, it was reported in Sahih Ibn Hibban with a continuous chain of narration from him to Abu Hurayrah that he said that the Messenger of Allah said:

It means: “The best among you are those with the best manners if they are learned about the matters of the Religion.

This hadith urges on having good manners and on learning the matters of the Religion, it states that the best among the Muslims is the one who combines between these two matters: Having good manners and being knowledgeable about the matters of the Religion.

Having good conduct alone without acquiring the knowledge of the Religion does not make the person of a high status in the Religion. Because having good manners is a common thing between Muslims and blasphemers, there are many people who worship the idols and have good manners; as the case of many believers.

So the one who learned well the Religious matters and implemented them, i.e. he learned what is obligatory to learn from the Knowledge of the Religion, which includes essentials of belief and the rules of the Religion; but he did not have good manners; this would a barrier for him to attain a high status in the Religion. However, what that person is missing is little comparable to the one who did not implement the knowledge he acquired.

Good manners comprise of: Enduring harm inflicted by others, treating others in a kind and good way, and refraining from harming others.

Treating others kindly is to treat them kindly in the way you talk to them, and to meet them with a charming face; and other than that. In short it means to treat kindly those who treat you kindly and those who do not. Because, it is not considered of the good manners if someone treats only those who treat him kindly the same way.

Enduring harm inflicted by others is to be patient with the harm inflicted on one by others, and to refrain from harming them. So the one who combined these three traits will be of a good conduct, and this matter is hard to attain; except for those whom Allah has facilitated it for them.

Thus, the one who combined between having good manners and being learned in the matters of the Religion will be among the good believers, consequently, the hadith shall apply to him:

which means: “The best among you are those with the best manners if they are learned about the matters of the Religion.

So those who say that it is enough to only have good manners without being learned about the matters of the Religion, those ones have committed a big mistake; because this matter is not the most important. Certainly, the most important matter is to believe in Allah and in His Messenger sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, and to learn what is obligatory upon the accountable person to learn, and to implement what the person had learned.

There are many righteous persons who do not have the trait of having good manners, yet they are among the saved ones in the hereafter; even though they did not attain that status of having good manners. Some people do not know the ranks of the matters of the Religion, they consider having good manners as the basics of the Religion.

An ignorant person who thinks that he is religious, yet he has nothing to do with the Religion said: “To me, manners take precedence over Iman (Belief).” People should be warned about the saying of this person and his likes. He who refrains from warning against this person is a mute devil. Abu ^Aliyy ad-Daqqaq said:

It means: “He who keeps silent about saying the truth is a mute devil.

So if the person does not learn the matters of the Religion, he will not understand things the right way; but rather he will have wrong thoughts about certain issues thinking that they are right. This is noted in the saying of some ignorant people:

This saying is invalid and it is not permissible to say it, they mean by saying it that the person no matter what his religion is, as long as he treats people good; then he is on the right path.

Allah mentioned in the Qur’an that those who choose a Religion other than Islam will not get any reward and that they are the losers in the Hereafter.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:

This hadith means that the advice in the Religion must agree with the rules of the Religion which Allah had revealed to His Messenger sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

In another hadith the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:

It means that Islam increases the person with goodness, so if a person used to treat people well before embracing Islam, then he will be of a better status after embracing Islam; because Islam orders and urges on having good conducts and manners.

So, it is required to have good manners for it is among the things which raises the person’s status on the Day of Judgment; however, to attain that status the person has to be learned about the matters of the Religion, this will escalate the person to great heights in the Hereafter.

Belief is a condition for the acceptance of the good deeds. Those who are not Muslims no matter how much they are merciful to the needy and compassionate to the orphans will not get any reward. Consequently, the one who says that they get rewards has blasphemed because he belied the Qur’an.

That is because Allah does not accept the good deeds without Belief (Iman).

The blasphemers of Quraysh, who were from Makkah and other areas, used to perform Hajj while they were blasphemers; they used to worship the idols. They placed three hundred sixty idols around the Ka^bah to worship them and they used to worship other than them. Nevertheless, they used to like imitating their Muslim forefathers who were following the Law (Shar^) of Isma^il peace be upon him and used to perform Hajj and ^Umrah according to the Law of Islam.

Long time after that they were tempted by a man named ^Amru, who taught them worshipping the idols and other ugly things, they obeyed him; however, they kept on performing what their forefathers used to do in Hajj.

The devil deceived them and ordered them to circumambulate around the Ka^bah without having clothes on. He said to them: You disobey Allah while you have these clothes on, how come you circumambulate around the Ka^bah with these clothes on your body, so they obeyed him.

So those among them who were alive when Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam was revealed and embraced Islam will not benefit from the many times they had performed Hajj, but they will benefit from the good deeds they did after embracing Islam. On the other hand, the one who is a Muslim and blasphemed then all of his good deeds will be erased, he will not benefit from them as Allah mentioned in the Qur’an.

A man whose name was ^Abdullah Ibn Jud^an from the clan of Abu Bakr asSiddiq, he used to treat the guests with hospitality and to rush in helping the needy, he used to connect with his kin.

That man used even to make the food and put it in front of his house on the street so that the travelers will eat from it without even getting down. He put the food on high baking pans so that the rider would eat without getting down.

^A’ishah may Allah raise her rank asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam: “O Messenger of Allah, my cousin <she said my cousin because he was from her clan> ^Abdullah Ibn Jud^an used to treat the guests with hospitality and to connect with his kin, and used to do this and that, would that benefit him?” He said: “No, he did not say even once: O Lord forgive my sin on the Judgment Day.”

It means that he did not use to believe in the hereafter, he used to worship the idol.

Arabs during State of Ignorance (Jahilyah) used to say: When the human dies and becomes soil, then he will not be resurrected. They used to deny the Resurrection (Ba^th).

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said: “He did not say even once: O Lord forgive my sin on the Day of Judgment.” Which means that he did not use to believe in the hereafter.

That man, ^Abdullah Ibn Jud^an was in the beginning an evil murderous. His father disowned him, he said to him in front of the clan: “I do not acknowledge you as my son.” He exiled him.

So he hated life and said: “I do not want to live, I hate this life, for my father has disowned me, and my people knew about it.”

He went to some mountains in Makkah seeking his own death by a snake bite in the mountains. He found an opening which was a small cave in the mountain, people say about that small opening in the mountain that it is the place for beasts and snakes; usually it cannot be noticed without looking thoroughly at its location since people do not enter it normally.

So, he entered that small cave thinking that there will be a snake in it which will bite him and cause his death. He found there a big snake, he thought that it was a real one; as matter of fact it was not. What he saw was the form of a big snake which was full of gold and its eyes were made of jewels. He saw a bunch of gold and a bunch of silver, he saw also tall men lying on beds; they were from the ancient Arabs. He saw a board of silver with their history written in it, among what he saw was a poem:

O fellow have you ever seen a shepherd

returned to the udder what was milked out

Those men were fleeing from a king who invaded their country, they could not fight him back, so they took whatever money and gold they could. They entered that small cave to live there until they would either die or relief will come. Their case looks like the People of the Cave in some aspects, their bodies were as they were when they died; however, if someone would touch them they would be like ashes. It is possible that they anointed their bodies with embalmment. Embalmment is of two kinds: One is used to give the dead body a nice aroma, and it is recommended to be used for the dead Muslim, because some dead bodies have bad odor. This could be due to a wound in his body like those who were inflicted with a flesh eating disease, and the other kind is used to prevent fast decaying of the dead body.

It is possible that those men who were in the cave were Muslims, and the meaning of their writing on that board is that: We do not go back to our original state after death same as the milk cannot go back to the udder of the cow after it left it. They were so desperate because of what happened to them. Someone said:

Money could be collected by the one who will not consume it

And the one who will consume it is other than the one who collected it

 This poem applies to them.

After that ^Abdullah Ibn Jud^an went back to his people, he started to distribute the gold to them; so they made him their master. After that he became generous to people and started to give his relatives. He did a lot of the good deeds and benevolence to people, yet it will not benefit him; because he did that seeking to be praised by people. In addition to that he did not use to believe in the hereafter and that is why the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam mentioned that it will not benefit him.

As for the believer, every good deed he does which agrees and complies with the Shar^ with the intention to get reward from Allah only; and he did not seek reputation and did not do it out of insincerity; no matter how small it is to Allah it will be great. On the other hand the one who does not clear Allah from resembling the creations will not benefit from anything in the hereafter.

Since Iman is a pre-condition for the deeds to be accepted, it became known to us the merit of the correct belief in Allah and His Messenger sallallahu ^alayhi wa salam; without it the deeds will not be accepted. They will be as Allah said in Surat Ibrahim, Verse 18 about the deeds of the blasphemers:

It means: “Like the fine ashes which will be blown up in the air and disappear by the heavy wind.

Allah also said in Surat al-Furqan, Verse 23 about the deeds of the blasphemers:

It means:  “As the sprinkled dust.
